Ben Althaus
Project Manager/Technician
After serving in U.S. Marine Corps from 1989-1993, Ben Althaus decided he needed a real job (he went into the Entertainment Industry instead). Working calls as a member of IATSE Stagehands, Local 17 in Louisville, Ky.
In 1999, Ben became the Head Electrician at The Brown Theatre where he participated in everything from “Miss so-and-so’s” dance company, musical acts, modern dance, ballet and opera. Phantom of the Opera (Music Box Company) called in 2001 and he headed out on tour as the Front light Operator / Cue Caller until 2003.
Once it was time to get off the road, Ben joined Phoenix Lighting. A “couple of days” of work ended up turning him into “the shop guy” from 2003 -2024. With Phoenix, he continued his Broadway tour work joining the Lion King to assist with set up when both national tours moved simultaneously. During his time, he also became involved in the design, drawing and implementation of numerous production aspects of the entertainment, trade shows, and with local schools/churches. Designing and implementing everything from theatre/sanctuary lighting and dimming/control upgrades to complete re-fits. The Mid America Trucking Show and The National Education Association (NEA) were annual shows he oversaw with massive amounts of equipment. It was not unusual to have 5000 linear feet of truss and over 100 chain motors on those shows.
Ben joined Crossfade Design in 2024 which offered him an opportunity to combine all of his experiences into new fields like Television, Sports and Concerts.
However, when the house lights fade and the main curtain goes out, or the walk-in look fades and the show begins, is the best.
The patrons are there for a reason.
The suspension of disbelief, being in the moment, welcome to …. THE SHOW
Thank goodness his supportive wife for her understanding, as she has her own professional career. Ben works out of Crossfade Design’s Indiana office.
